Innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity took center stage at the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) as students unveiled groundbreaking business ideas during the Innovative Solutions Pitch Day, an event held alongside the official launch of the UNILAK Business Incubation Center on the 24th of July 2026. The landmark event, organized by UNILAK Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management in partnership with RICEM Rwanda, Azaria God Foundation, and AMIR Rwanda, brought together students, innovators, entrepreneurs, industry experts, and development partners to foster a culture of innovation and empower the next generation of business leaders. The event marked the first edition of the Innovative Solutions Pitch Day and provided students with a unique platform to present transformative business ideas addressing real-world challenges across various sectors. Throughout the day, participants confidently pitched their projects before a panel of judges, who evaluated the ideas through detailed presentations and interactive question and answer sessions, assessing their feasibility, innovation, sustainability, and potential social and economic impact. In his opening remarks, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance at UNILAK, Mr. Richard Niyonkuru commended the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management for initiating the competition, noting that innovation and entrepreneurship are essential pillars in preparing graduates for today’s competitive world. He encouraged participants to seize the opportunity to refine their ideas and transform them into viable enterprises capable of contributing to Rwanda’s socio-economic development. A major highlight of the event was the official launch of the UNILAK Business Incubation Center (BIC), a strategic initiative aimed at nurturing innovative ideas into sustainable businesses. The center is expected to provide aspiring entrepreneurs with mentorship, business development support, networking opportunities, and access to resources that will help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and the marketplace. The launch represents a significant milestone in UNILAK commitment to promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, and practical learning while strengthening collaboration between academia, industry, and development partners. As students showcased their innovative concepts, the atmosphere reflected the university’s vision of cultivating creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial excellence. The judges engaged each team with insightful questions, offering constructive feedback to help participants strengthen their business models and prepare for future investment and commercialization opportunities. The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the most outstanding innovators. Three student teams whose ideas demonstrated exceptional creativity, impact, and business potential were honoured as the best performers, receiving awards in recognition of their achievements. Speaking at the close of the event, organizers emphasized that the launch of the Business Incubation Center and the successful hosting of the inaugural Pitch Day signal the beginning of a new chapter in UNILAK innovation ecosystem. Through continued mentorship, strategic partnerships, and incubation support, the university aims to empower students to transform bold ideas into successful ventures that create jobs, solve community challenges, and contribute to national development.  

The Faculty of Law at the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK), in partnership with the Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia (OWECC-L), hosted a thought-provoking conference on “Transitional Justice in Africa: Liberia as a Case Study.” The conference brought together students, legal scholars, and practitioners to explore the critical role of transitional justice in promoting accountability, reconciliation, and sustainable peace in post-conflict societies across Africa. The discussion was facilitated by Robert Turyahebwa, Dean of the Faculty of Law at UNILAK, and Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu (Prof.), Executive Director of OWECC-L and Dean Emeritus of the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law at the University of Liberia. Drawing on their extensive expertise, the speakers shared valuable perspectives on Liberia’s transitional justice journey, highlighting both its achievements and the challenges of addressing past atrocities while fostering national healing. Throughout the conference, participants examined the importance of strengthening legal institutions, ensuring accountability for war and economic crimes, and promoting restorative justice as essential pillars for lasting peace and development. The discussions also underscored the significance of regional cooperation and the exchange of best practices among African countries navigating post-conflict reconstruction. Students actively engaged with the speakers through a question-and-answer session, reflecting a growing interest in transitional justice, human rights, and international criminal law. The interactive dialogue encouraged critical thinking on the role future legal professionals can play in advancing justice and the rule of law across the continent. The conference reaffirmed UNILAK Faculty of Law’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and creating platforms for meaningful discussions on contemporary legal issues. It also strengthened collaboration between UNILAK and OWECC-L in advancing legal education, research, and policy dialogue on justice and accountability in Africa.  

Students at UNILAK Kigali Campus participated in an inspiring session focused on access to justice, legal empowerment, and professional development through a collaborative initiative between UNILAK, Rwanda Bridges to Justice (RBJ), and the Rwanda Bar Association. The event brought together legal professionals, academics, and aspiring lawyers to discuss the vital role of legal aid, ethical practice, and youth engagement in strengthening access to justice in Rwanda. The session also highlighted the importance of partnerships in preparing future legal professionals with both practical skills and a strong commitment to serving their communities. Delivering his remarks, President of the Rwanda Bar Association, Adv. Nkundabarashi Moise, encouraged students to uphold the values of integrity, professionalism, and continuous learning as they prepare to enter the legal profession. He emphasized the responsibility of lawyers to promote justice and protect the rights of all citizens. Executive Director of Rwanda Bridges to Justice, Adv. Bugingo John Bosco, underscored the importance of legal empowerment and expanding access to justice, particularly for vulnerable communities. He encouraged students to actively engage in initiatives that bridge the gap between legal knowledge and community service, noting that practical experience is essential in developing competent and compassionate legal practitioners. Representing UNILAK, Dean of the School of Law, Adv. Robert Turyahebwa, expressed appreciation to the Rwanda Bridges to Justice and the Rwanda Bar Association for their continued collaboration with the University. He reaffirmed UNILAK commitment to providing quality legal education that combines academic excellence with practical exposure, enabling graduates to make meaningful contributions to the justice sector. A highlight of the event was the recognition of students who participated in the Moot Court programme. The participants were awarded certificates in appreciation of their dedication, hard work, and commitment to developing their advocacy and courtroom skills through practical legal training.  

The University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) was pleased to host the National Public Service Commission (NPSC) for an informative sensitization campaign aimed at equipping students with a better understanding of Rwanda’s public service recruitment process. The session, which took place on June 24th, 2026, provided students with valuable guidance on how recruitment into the public service is conducted, highlighting the principles of transparency, merit, and equal opportunity. Representatives from the National Public Service Commission explained the application process, eligibility requirements, and best practices for preparing competitive applications. Students were encouraged to actively explore and apply for public service opportunities, with the Commission emphasizing the vital role that young professionals play in driving national development through ethical and dedicated public service. The interactive session also gave students the opportunity to ask questions, engage in meaningful discussions, and gain practical insights into building rewarding careers in the public sector. The University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Inha University Climate Crisis Response Project Group to strengthen collaboration and contribute to global efforts in addressing the climate crisis. The partnership brings together the two institutions to promote joint initiatives aimed at advancing climate change response, environmental sustainability, research, and knowledge exchange. Through this cooperation, UNILAK and Inha University Climate Crisis Response Project Group will work together to develop impactful solutions that support climate resilience and sustainable development. The agreement will remain in effect until February 2029, with the possibility of extension, providing a long-term framework for continued collaboration and innovation in climate-related initiatives. This partnership reflects UNILAK commitment to expanding international cooperation and strengthening research-driven approaches to address pressing global challenges. By working with international partners, the University continues to create opportunities for students, researchers, and communities to participate in initiatives that promote environmental protection and sustainable development. Together, UNILAK and Inha University Climate Crisis Response Project Group are committed to contributing meaningful solutions toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

The University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) Environmental Club has secured a RWF 10 million award to support the implementation of an innovative green project aimed at creating a positive environmental impact. The achievement was announced as part of the celebrations marking World Environment Day, where different stakeholders recognized initiatives contributing to environmental protection, sustainability, and climate action. The winning project, presented by the UNILAK Environmental Club, reflects the commitment of students to developing practical solutions that address environmental challenges while promoting sustainable practices within communities. The award will enable the club to transform its vision into action through the implementation of environmentally friendly activities and initiatives. The success highlights UNILAK continued commitment to nurturing innovation, research, and student-led solutions in addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, waste management, and environmental conservation. Through its Environmental Club and other student initiatives, UNILAK continues to empower young people to become responsible environmental stewards and active contributors to sustainable development. Rwanda Finance Limited (RFL) visited the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) to engage students in an informative session aimed at enhancing their understanding of career opportunities, professional development pathways, and the evolving financial sector in Rwanda. During the engagement, representatives from RFL delivered insightful presentations highlighting various career opportunities available within the financial industry, the importance of professional certifications, and the skills required for graduates to succeed in a competitive global finance environment. The session also provided students with valuable insights into the role and significance of the Kigali International Financial Centre (KIFC) in positioning Rwanda as a leading financial hub in Africa. Students learned about emerging opportunities in areas such as investment, financial services, and innovation within the sector. The interactive session allowed students to actively participate through discussions, questions, and knowledge-sharing with industry professionals. Through these exchanges, students gained practical perspectives on career planning, professional growth, and the importance of aligning their academic journeys with industry demands. On 28th May, the Capital Market Authority of Rwanda (CMA) hosted an engaging roadshow at UNILAK Kigali Campus, bringing financial sector awareness directly to students. The event was designed to sensitize students on investment opportunities available within Rwanda’s growing financial markets and to highlight the roles of key institutions that regulate and support the country’s capital market ecosystem. Through interactive sessions, presentations, and open discussions, students gained valuable insights into how capital market operations function, the importance of savings and investment, and the different pathways through which young people can actively participate in wealth creation. Officials from CMA Rwanda also emphasized the importance of financial literacy among youth, encouraging students to consider long-term investment habits and explore opportunities in stocks, bonds, and other financial instruments. The initiative was well received by students, who expressed appreciation for the practical knowledge shared and the opportunity to engage directly with financial experts. The roadshow marked an important step in strengthening financial awareness within the university community and inspiring future investors.
