Students from UNILAK proudly represented the university at Kempten University of Applied Sciences during a week-long academic exchange held from 23 to 28 June 2026 under the Erasmus+ KA171 programme, funded by the European Union. Accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management, Prof. Christine Umumararungu, the students collaborated with their counterparts from Kempten University to develop innovative solutions addressing real-world challenges. Throughout the programme, the students showcased their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills by presenting projects they had jointly developed with German students. Their outstanding performance saw three of the six project teams qualify for the final round of the competition, including the Smart Irrigation System (SIS) team, which featured UNILAK students. The exchange concluded with the successful presentation of final projects, where participants pitched practical and innovative ideas aimed at solving pressing societal challenges. Beyond the academic achievements, the programme provided invaluable international exposure, strengthened intercultural collaboration, and enhanced the students’ professional and entrepreneurial skills. UNILAK is proud of its students for representing the university with excellence on the international stage and demonstrating the quality of education and innovation fostered within the institution.  

In the last week of May 2026, Dr. Albert Maake, a lecturer at UNILAK, delivered an engaging lecture to Economics students at the Kwidzyn Campus in Poland as part of an academic staff mobility program aimed at strengthening international academic collaboration and knowledge exchange. Dr. Maake’s visit formed part of an ongoing effort to enhance partnerships between higher learning institutions through academic mobility, allowing lecturers and students to benefit from shared expertise, innovative teaching approaches, and cross-cultural academic experiences. During the lecture session, Dr. Maake interacted with Economics students, sharing insights and perspectives relevant to their field of study while fostering intellectual discussions on contemporary economic issues. The engagement provided an opportunity for students to gain international academic exposure and learn from diverse experiences beyond their local context. Speaking about the experience, the academic staff mobility program continues to serve as an important platform for promoting global partnerships, collaborative learning, and institutional networking among universities.  

Dr. Martin Vincent Nsanzumukiza, Director of Research & Consultancy at UNILAK, represented the institution at a two-day capacity building workshop on the Research Excellence Framework for Higher Education in East Africa (REFHE-EA) held in Entebbe, Uganda. The workshop was organized by the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) and brought together higher education stakeholders from across the region to strengthen institutional research capacity and promote excellence in research management within East African universities. During the workshop, participants engaged in discussions on research quality enhancement, institutional research assessment frameworks, and strategies for improving the impact and visibility of research in higher education institutions across the region. The UNILAK participation reflects its continued commitment to advancing research excellence, fostering academic innovation, and strengthening regional collaboration in higher education. The knowledge and insights gained from the workshop are expected to contribute to enhancing the University’s research agenda and consultancy services.  

UNILAK has extended its warm congratulations to its student, Ange Benie Rudasingwa, for emerging as the winner of the Best Conference Speech Contest, “Young Owl Award,” held at Powiślańska Academy of Applied Sciences in Poland. Ange, who is currently in Poland under the Erasmus+ Programme student exchange initiative, impressed the judges with a compelling and insightful presentation that stood out among participants from various international institutions. The competition, which took place during an academic conference hosted by Powiślańska Academy of Applied Sciences, aimed to highlight excellence in public speaking, critical thinking, and academic communication among young scholars. Powiślańska Academy of Applied Sciences praised the high level of engagement from all participants, noting that this year’s contest showcased exceptional talent and global academic exchange. The university community celebrates this remarkable accomplishment, which reflects both her personal dedication and UNILAK commitment to nurturing globally competitive students. Her success also highlights the impact of international academic mobility in shaping confident and skilled young professionals. UNILAK applauds Ange for this milestone achievement and wishes her continued success in her academic and professional journey.  

Dr. Albert Maake, a lecturer at UNILAK, recently participated in the International Week held at Powiślańska Academy of Applied Sciences in Poland. The event took place from 20th–24th May 2026 and brought together academicians, researchers, and students from various countries to promote international academic cooperation and exchange. During the programme, Dr. Maake also took part in the XIII International Scientific Conference, which was organized as part of the International Week activities. The conference provided a platform for participants to present research findings, exchange ideas, and discuss emerging trends across different academic fields. His participation contributed to strengthening the long-standing partnership between UNILAK and Powiślańska Academy of Applied Sciences, particularly in the areas of research collaboration and academic mobility. The cooperation between the two institutions continues to support opportunities for student and staff exchange under the ERASMUS+ Programme. This engagement reflects the university’s commitment to enhancing global partnerships and ensuring its academic community remains actively involved in international knowledge-sharing platforms. Dr. Albert Maake’s involvement further highlights the university’s dedication to advancing international exposure and strengthening its academic footprint beyond Rwanda.  

UNILAK had the distinct honor of welcoming Sylver Aboubakar Minko Mi-Nseme, the Ambassador of the Republic of Gabon in Rwanda, during a special visit aimed at engaging with the institution’s 287 Gabonese students currently pursuing their studies at the University. The Ambassador was warmly received by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Admnistration and Finace, Mr. Richard Niyonkuru, alongside members of the University leadership, in a gesture that reflected the institution’s commitment to fostering strong international partnerships. The visit marked an important moment in the growing relationship between UNILAK and the Republic of Gabon, highlighting a shared vision of advancing education, strengthening institutional collaboration, and promoting cross-cultural exchange. It also underscored the confidence placed in UNILAK as a preferred destination for higher education by Gabonese students.   In his address to the students, the Ambassador expressed his appreciation to the University for the support and academic environment provided to his compatriots. He commended the students for choosing to pursue their studies abroad and encouraged them to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to achieving academic excellence. Emphasizing their role beyond the classroom, the Ambassador reminded them that they serve as ambassadors of Gabon, carrying the values, image, and aspirations of their nation wherever they go. He further urged the students to remain mindful of the sacrifices made by their families and the trust placed in them by their country. According to the Ambassador, success in their academic journey would not only benefit them individually but also contribute to the development of Gabon upon their return. Mr. Richard Niyonkuru, in his remarks, reaffirmed UNILAK’s dedication to providing quality education and a supportive learning environment for all international students. He noted that the presence of students from Gabon enriches the University’s cultural diversity and strengthens its global outlook. He also reiterated the institution’s openness to further collaboration with Gabonese institutions in areas of academic exchange, research, and capacity building. The highlight of the visit was an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students openly engaged with the Ambassador on a range of topics, including academic challenges, future career opportunities, and ways to contribute to national development. The discussion created a platform for meaningful dialogue and strengthened the connection between the students and their home country. The visit concluded on a positive and inspiring note, leaving students motivated and reassured of their importance as future leaders and contributors to Gabon’s progress. It also reinforced the strong ties between UNILAK and the Republic of Gabon, paving the way for deeper cooperation and continued engagement in the years ahead.

UNILAK has taken a significant step toward strengthening global leadership education through a strategic engagement with the Institute of One World Leadership (IOWL). The Institute’s delegation, led by its President and Executive Director Professor Noel and Vice President and Provost Professor Michele, conducted a week-long visit in February 2026. During their visit, the delegation engaged students across UNILAK Nyanza, Rwamagana, and Kigali campuses, delivering sessions on the Professional Programme in Positive Value Leadership (PVL). The programme focuses on cultivating ethical leadership, personal development, and professional excellence, equipping students with critical skills for their future careers in a rapidly evolving global environment. A major highlight of the visit was IOWL’s announcement of a 90% bursary for all UNILAK students and alumni, significantly reducing the cost of participation and ensuring broader access to the programme. Upon completion, participants will be awarded an internationally recognized certificate, enhancing their competitiveness in both local and global job markets. The university’s Senior Management Committee warmly received the delegation, holding high-level discussions on the implementation of the PVL programme. Professor Michele, who is also affiliated with University College London, emphasized the transformative impact of value-based leadership training in shaping responsible global citizens. UNILAK leadership expressed strong enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that the collaboration aligns with the institution’s vision of delivering quality education grounded in global standards. The introduction of the PVL programme is expected to play a key role in equipping students with not only academic knowledge but also the values and professional competencies required in today’s interconnected world. This partnership marks a new chapter in UNILAK commitment to international collaboration and student empowerment through innovative, value-driven education.  

On 22 December 2025, UNILAK, Rwamagana Campus, proudly welcomed a distinguished delegation from Naruto University of Education in Japan, marking a significant moment of international academic and cultural exchange. The delegation, led by Prof. Satoshi Kusaka, expressed appreciation for the warm and well-organized reception accorded to them upon arrival. The visit reflected a growing partnership between the two institutions and a shared commitment to fostering global collaboration in education. Students of UNILAK enthusiastically engaged with their Japanese counterparts, participating in interactive sessions that encouraged cultural exchange, dialogue, and friendship-building. The atmosphere was vibrant, as students shared experiences, traditions, and perspectives, deepening mutual understanding between Rwanda and Japan. The visit not only strengthened institutional ties but also provided students with a valuable opportunity to broaden their global outlook. University officials noted that such engagements are essential in preparing students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. The successful visit underscores UNILAK dedication to internationalization and its role as a hub for cross-cultural learning and collaboration.  

UNILAK was honored to receive His Excellency Tri Yogo Jatmiko, Ambassador of Indonesia to Rwanda, along with his delegation on December 17, 2025, in a visit that underscored growing diplomatic and academic ties between the two nations. The high-level engagement provided a platform for fruitful discussions centered on strengthening collaboration in the field of education. Key areas of focus included the exchange of visiting professors, the development of sponsorship opportunities for both staff and students, and the sharing of best practices in higher education systems. University officials highlighted the importance of such partnerships in fostering global academic exposure and enhancing institutional capacity. The visit also reflected a shared commitment to promoting knowledge exchange and building sustainable cooperation between UNILAK and Indonesian institutions. The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing optimism about future collaborations that will benefit students, faculty, and the broader academic community in both countries.

As the sole representative from Rwanda, the university is showcasing the country’s higher education potential while fostering meaningful connections with global partners. The International Week is expected to enhance collaborative research opportunities, student and staff mobility, and the sharing of best practices in teaching and learning. Through such engagements, UNILAK continues to position itself as a key player in global academic networks, advancing its mission to deliver competence-based education through diverse and inclusive partnerships.
