The Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management is home to a wide range of specialist research centres spanning the disciplines of accounting, actuarial studies, economics, finance and management and marketing. Our academics are also active collaborators in multi-partner centres which bring together researchers and practitioners from a range of disciplines and industries.

The Research Centre is committed to building partnerships and enhancing collaboration between the University and the business sector by offering an environment that fosters rigorous research across the entire spectrum of accounting for both scholars and practitioners.
Through research projects, guest lecturing, symposia and a range of other activities, we work with our partners to develop and maintain lasting partnerships. This close association with industry and government ensures our courses provide training and skills valued by both graduates and employers and enables us to effectively communicate our expertise and research results in line with our objectives,/p.

Research Infrastructure at the Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law at UNILAK is a progressive research community. Enhancing traditional approaches while also developing new ones through research is one of the Faculty's top priorities.
The Faculty carries out cutting-edge research in all fields of law, and in a variety of areas spanning from law and gender, sociology of law, information, international criminal law and international environmental law. Our community benefits from an international environment, including researchers from various nationalities. We aim at contributing to the social and legal development in Rwanda through national and international publications and by providing research-based teaching. Our researchers also participate in drafting of legislation and the ongoing legal and societal discussion in Rwanda.

Research work carried out by our scientists in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Development and Multimedia, often forms the basis for applications in other fields, as well. Hence, our top priority is to carry out research at the very highest academic level. This also influences our high-level study programs. Our main research areas are outlined below:
Information and communication technology
We aim to make communication systems more secure, faster and smarter: using on-the-fly wifi, for example. We are leveraging metadata management methodologies, AI and big data to generate ubiquitous and complex information systems and to solve big-data problems.
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
We aim to understand and develop theoretical foundations of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DS&AI) and the bridging between them with major focus on scalable and continual machine learning, computational intelligence, statistical modelling, computer vision, and knowledge engineering. Our interest covers also applied DS&AI to develop (collaborative) decision support systems in a number of areas such as process industry, smart environments, smart energy, remote sensing, assistive technologies, and healthcare.
Future and Complex Networks
We conduct fundamental and applied research in the broad area of networks – from natural and physical networks (e.g. social networks, transportation systems, utility grids, brain structure) to digital infrastructures (e.g. the internet, computer networks, etc). The research focus areas of FlexNet include network science, information-centric networking (ICN), the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, crowdsourced systems and other emerging network paradigms.
Simulation Technology
We develop robust simulation methodologies that are easy to operate based on efficient and highly parallel simulation algorithms, as well as the necessary software environments.
Language and knowledge processing
We carry out research into the automatic processing of human language to further linguistic human-system communication and to facilitate access to information and knowledge.

The Faculty of Environmental Studies is actively involved in applied research. We link environmental quality with management capacity and educational opportunities through our research efforts.
Both faculty and students participate in research that leads to significant discoveries and gives everyone an opportunity to learn and grow. The environment is the perfect laboratory in the classroom and field.

Today, sustainability is a driver of modernization and profound changes are taking place in society. As the pace of technological change accelerates, environmental concerns reach crisis levels and demands for justice intensify, there is an imperative to focus our research on the world’s most pressing challenges.Rural Development Research
The Division of Rural Development engages in international research, teaching and cooperation that contributes to scholarship and practice on broad aspects of development and sustainability in rural areas.
Across the globe, rural areas are undergoing rapid transformations caused by social and economic policies, globalization and climate and environmental change. We engage with issues of justice, knowledge and power in agriculture, forestry, development and environmental politics.
By bringing to bear intersectional perspectives of power on the issues we study, we combat mainstream imaginations of the rural as residual, uninhabited, spaces for extraction and passive providers of food and natural resources. Our strength lies in our commitment to probing how development processes unfold through interdisciplinary conceptualizations and participatory methodologies.
