UNILAK pays tribute to victims of Genocide against the Tutsi

The University of Lay Adventists of Kigali, Kigali Campus held a commemoration event of the 29th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis this Wednesday 24th of May, 2023.

To mark the day, students and officials of the university  laid a wreath at Nyanza Genocide Memorial in Kicukiro, a final resting place of over 96 000 victims of the Genocide.

Themed: “Remember-Unite-Renew”, the commemoration is a call to everyone to recommit to preventing and fighting against genocide, especially hate speech and other related crimes that can lead to genocide and to ensure it never happens again – in Rwanda or elsewhere in Africa and beyond.

Most importantly, this year’s commemoration provided an opportunity to pay tribute to the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsis as were as showing solidarity with the survivors.

The day was marked by a series of activities, which included a “Walk to Remember’, in memory of the victims and in solidarity with survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsis; observance of a minute of silence to pay tribute to victims of the genocide; candle-lighting ceremony as a sign of hope; reading messages of hope, a presentation on the history of Rwanda that lead to the culmination of the genocide against Tutsi.

Speakers of the day urged students to stay away from any kind of discrimination, to visit the memorial so as to learn genocide history and strive to ensure it never happens again.

An event of this kind took place at UNILAK/Nyanza Campus on April 29th and will also take place at Rwamagana Campus on June 1st, 2023.
