UNILAK in partnership with XIEG-CAS and SAJOREC successfully hosted a one day workshop on Multi-Hazard Monitoring with GIS and Remote Sensing (RS) Technologies, bringing together students, researchers, and professionals committed to advancing Rwanda’s disaster risk reduction and climate resilience efforts. The training was designed to strengthen national capacities in geospatial science and directly support Rwanda’s strategies for disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and sustainable development. Through hands-on sessions, participants were equipped with essential skills in remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and earth observation tools that play a vital role in monitoring climate-related hazards and guiding data-driven decision-making. At the opening workshop, Mr. Richard Niyonkuru, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance at UNILAK warmly welcomed all participants and extended sincere appreciation to the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) for their longstanding support in advancing geospatial knowledge at UNILAK. He encouraged participants to make the most of the training and wished them a productive experience. Representing the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Zhang Xiaohong, a senior official highlighted the enduring partnership between UNILAK and XIEG-CAS, which dates back to 2012. He celebrated the fruitful outcomes of this collaboration, including several joint research projects and the establishment of a shared research center dedicated to soil, water, and geospatial technologies. This cooperation, he noted, continues to be a cornerstone of China-Africa scientific exchange and capacity-building. Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in comprehensive courses on geospatial analysis, remote sensing applications, and the use of earth observation data in monitoring climate-related disaster risks across Rwanda. Each session was accompanied by interactive Q&A segments, allowing participants to deepen their understanding and exchange ideas with experts. The workshop concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony, where participants were recognized for their dedication and achievements.

A team of academic staff from UNILAK attended a two-day International Conference on Living Lab, hosted for the fifth time at Yonsei University, one of UNILAK’s most valued and long-standing partners. The annual conference brings together scholars, innovators, and practitioners from around the world to explore community-driven problem-solving, collaborative research, and real-world innovation through the Living Lab model. By taking part in this prestigious event, UNILAK staff are gaining valuable insights into global best practices and strengthening the university’s commitment to advancing research and community engagement. Yonsei University, recognized as one of Asia’s leading institutions, has been a key partner to UNILAK in promoting academic exchange, knowledge sharing, and collaborative research. The participation of UNILAK academic team further reinforces this partnership and opens new opportunities for future joint initiatives. The two-day conference continues to offer dynamic sessions, presentations, and networking opportunities, giving the UNILAK delegation a platform to showcase the institution’s progress while learning from international experts in Living Lab innovation.

UNILAK has taken a major step forward in strengthening international partnerships by signing a six-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hubei University of Technology (HUT), one of China’s leading institutions of higher learning. The agreement was formally signed by UNILAK Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ngamije Jean, and HUT Vice President, Prof. He Xingyang, at an event held on September 29, 2025. The MoU establishes a broad framework for cooperation over the next six years, opening doors for joint education programs, collaborative research initiatives, faculty and student exchanges, innovation and technology cooperation. Speaking at the event, Prof. Ngamije highlighted the importance of the partnership for Rwanda’s higher education landscape. “This collaboration signifies a milestone in UNILAK journey to become a hub of academic excellence and innovation. By joining forces with Hubei University of Technology, we are creating opportunities that will benefit not only our students and faculty but also contribute to Rwanda’s vision of knowledge-driven development,” declared Prof. Ngamije.     Prof. He Xingyang echoed this sentiment, emphasizing HUT’s enthusiasm for the partnership. “Our collaboration with UNILAK represents an exciting opportunity to build bridges between China and Rwanda through education, research, and innovation. We are confident that this MoU will lead to meaningful outcomes and a stronger global academic community.” The six-year agreement reflects UNILAK ongoing commitment to cultivating strong international linkages. It is expected to enhance institutional capacity, diversify academic offerings, and prepare graduates with the global skills and perspectives needed to thrive in today’s interconnected world.
