Prof. Ediagbonya Thompson Faraday
Professor of Environmental Chemistry
Prof. Ediagbonya Thompson Faraday is a full Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali, Rwanda, and in the Department of Chemical Sciences at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology in Okitipupa, Ondo State. He got his BSc Hons in Chemistry and MSc in Environmental & Analytical Chemistry from the University of Benin, Nigeria, in 1999 and 2005, respectively. In June 2011, he graduated with a PhD in Environmental Chemistry from the same University of Benin in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.
He joined Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology in 2013 as a Lecturer 11 and ascended through the ranks to full Professorship in Environmental Chemistry. Prior to that, he worked at Western Delta University in Oghara, Delta, Nigeria, from 2012 to 2013. His primary scientific interests include environmental chemistry and toxicology.
His research interests span a variety of disciplines, all of which draw on his skills in analytical and environmental chemistry: Environmental pollution and toxicology, with an emphasis on the environmental impact of toxic substances and their effects on humans and the environment, the origin, transport, distribution, and fate of environmental pollutants (such as TPH, OCP, PCBs, PAHs, and heavy metals, as well as noxious gases, greenhouse gases, and atmospheric particles), human exposure, associated health risks, and ecotoxicology. It comprises aquatic pollution and chemical pollution in big and small-scale artisanal mining, water quality assurance and quality control analysis of subsurface, surface, and air pollutants. In terms of environmental contamination, he studies:TPH, OCP, PCBs, PAHs, heavy metals, radionuclide pollution of soils, river sediments, surface waters, crab, fish from the general aquatic ecosystem, and air particle matter.He has immense zeal for climate issue He has mentored innumerable postgraduate students and over one hundred undergraduate students.
He has taught in both universities and secondary schools for a long time. He belongs to respectable organisations including the Nigeria Chemical Society and the Environmental Society of Nigeria.
Prof. Ediagbonya has a remarkable background in environmental chemistry and is an experienced researcher and enthusiast. More than seventy (70) Scopus journals published by Wily, Tailor and Francis, Inderscience, Springer, and Elsevier are among his more than one hundred (100) articles (Q1 and Q2).
Prof. Ediagbonya's talents transcend beyond his educational pursuits : he has held numerous significant jobs. In the past, he served as the director of the Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme, the Head of the Department of Chemical Science, the Examination Officer, and the sub-dean of the School of Science, to name a few. Since 2015, he has served as the congregation's representative in the Senate. Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) 2022 and 2023 are only a couple of the many honours he has earned, including a DAAD Fellowship in Germany and other research grants.
He was awarded a postdoctoral scholarship at the Max Planck Institute of Chemistry in 2020. Presently, He is a professor in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali, Rwanda since 2024.
